What you *really* need to know about fillers
- Nov 05, 2019-
We need to talk about aesthetic treatments. Like, really talk. Because there’s no getting away from the fact that fillers and tweakments have become a major part of the mainstream beauty industry. Yet there are still a lot of misconceptions out there about what they are, what they can treat and how to go about finding trusted practitioners. And in recent years, huge advances in technology mean the industry has moved on a long way since the early days of one-size-fits all treatments.
Whether you’re actively exploring the idea of having a cosmetic treatment, or you’re simply curious about what’s available, the most important thing is to make sure you have the most up-to-date information. And because you’re bound to have lots of questions – we know we do – who better to go to for advice than a highly respected clinician actually working in the industry?
We sat down with Dr Jonquille Chantrey, a leading doctor and international lecturer in aesthetic treatments to get to the bottom of the latest developments in filler technology, and get some advice on making sure you get the best possible treatment.
“It’s all about informed choices so that you can be the best version of yourself in the most empowered way,” says Dr Chantrey. We couldn’t agree more. Here, she answers our burning questions about all things facial fillers, Juvéderm and beauty.
QWhat is Juvéderm and what does it help with?
A“There’s lots of different types of facial fillers out there. The most safe and trusted ones are made from hyaluronic acid, and what they’re for is to hydrate the skin, to treat lines and also reshape the face, so you can use it in the lips, the cheeks, the chin.”
QHow do I find a trusted practitioner?
A“We would always recommend to go and see a doctor, prescribing nurse or a dentist and check that they are registered with their governing body. Also, key pointers are: are they insured? Ask to see their insurance. If they’re a mobile practitioner and they don’t have an established practice; a lot of the great practitioners have established practices that have been there for many years, and they have a lot of patients. Don’t just go on social media and see the popularity, it’s important to do a deeper level of research. There’s so much information out there. Visit the Juvederm website, go to ‘clinic locator’ and you’ll be able to find a nearby practitioner who’s approved.”
QHow do I get the correct advice on aftercare?
A“This is one of the most important questions. You need to be looked after after a medical treatment by a prescribing nurse, a doctor, or a dentist – they’ll be able to give you the correct aftercare advice.”
QWhy do treatment prices vary so dramatically?
A“There’s two main reasons. Number one, you’re paying for the expertise of the practitioner, and secondly, you’re paying for the brand. The best brands are the most researched and the safest ones, so it’s like any form of beauty product – you have the drugstore entry level, and you have your premium brands. So I would really recommend asking for the brand that you want.”
QWhat’s the best way to ensure my fillers look natural?
A“Beauty is such an individual concept – there’s maths and there’s proportions that need to be assessed. And really, it’s only a true expert who has had time in the field and has done a lot of training who can really deliver that. So don’t always go with a preconceived idea that you just have to have your lips done, or you just have to have your cheeks done, or you need a jawline doing. Actually, take advice from the expert because that really matters. And again, those beautiful results, we don’t always see it necessarily with ourselves, sometimes we need an external eye to keep us in check.”
QCan you ask a clinician for evidence of their work?
A“Absolutely. Just bear in mind that a lot of people will only put on social media their best work. What you need to ask for is something that’s relevant to you and your face. That might be your age group, it also might be that you’ve had orthodontics or you’ve had an underdeveloped chin. So you actually need to see pictures of somebody who looks more like you.”
QHow do I know which treatment I need for my area of concern?
“For so long it was thought that dermal fillers were there just to fill lines and wrinkles, but we can do so much more with them now. So, we can treat your skin, give you more of a skin glow with something like Juvéderm Volite. I also use that for acne scarring and other types of scarring. Then, there’s the amazing product that I launched internationally this year called Juvéderm Volux. This is all for the chin, so to project the chin and give you more definition and also for the jawline. There’s lots of different things that can be treated rather than just filling lines and wrinkles.”
